Text Box: Alan Uyemura is the Vice President of the CAP Board of Directors. Dr. Uyemura has been an optometrist in private practice in Fresno since 1983. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California, Berkeley in 1978 and his Doctor of Optometry degree from Southern College of Optometry in 1982.

He has served the community of Fresno and his profession in numerous other capacities such as serving as president of the Central California Optometric Society, Clovis Community Church, Executive Association of Fresno, and Fresno Sunrise Rotary.

Dr. Uyemura joined the Board when one of his patients, also a CAP Board member, invited him to serve. CAP stood out to him because he feels CAP serves a valuable function in the community by providing individuals with addictions a place to receive assistance in overcoming their challenges. His goal is to see CAP become more self sufficient financially. When he joined the Board there were some challenges, but he feels the agency has made good progress and he’s excited about continuing on the current path.

“The yellow wagon is the most useful donation that CAP has ever received,” said the Director, Juanita Fiorello.

It was donated by Jerry Fitzhenry, a CAP Board member. His daughter, who lives in Las Vegas, got it from a website that lists items being given away.  She said it was the best thing she ever got.  She used it to set up a raised garden in her back yard.  When she no longer had a use for it, she asked Jerry’s wife, Judy, if they could use it.  Jerry immediately thought of CAP, so they went to Las Vegas and brought it home in his

pickup.

“We use it for everything,” Dane Dowdell, who does maintenance for CAP, said about the yellow wagon. “It’s like a wheelbarrow but better.”

Dane likes it because it’s less strain than a wheelbarrow and it’s a lot easier to balance. He uses it to haul his tool box around, which can be quite heavy at times.  He estimates that it can hold up to 200 pounds.

It is used every day for something and there often is a wait for it. “We could probably use two of them,” said Dane.  One of the most frequent uses is moving personal belongings to and from rooms for clients

entering and leaving the program.  It is also used to haul supplies and materials for clean-up, landscaping, and gardening projects.

The yellow wagon has been extremely helpful at CAP.  It was recently washed down and repainted, thanks to Dane.  The plan is to keep it in good shape and keep it moving!
